Meet Bob Miller — McGill’s New Raleigh Office Manager!
McGill is so excited to introduce you to our new Raleigh office manager! Bob Miller comes to McGill with over 38 years of engineering, consulting, and project management experience.
We sat down with Bob to learn about his new role and what he wants our clients to know about McGill:
WHAT IS YOUR ROLE AT MCGILL?
I lead the Raleigh office. I am responsible for work safety and the professional development of the staff we have, and will have, as well as the operational success of the office. As I see it, my main mission is to provide opportunities for growth for our people while also helping our clients realize their goals.
WHY DID YOU GO INTO THE ENGINEERING PROFESSION?
I always liked chemistry and I wanted to be a chemical engineer. Having that degree, I was introduced to water and wastewater plants by a family friend back when I was in college. The chemistry I thought was really cool, plus the opportunity to make a positive impact on the environment was very appealing to me.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROFESSIONAL BACKGROUND
I’ve been an environmental (water and wastewater mostly, but also some hazardous waste and soil / groundwater issues) consultant for 38 years. I started in New York City and learned from people that literally have equations named after them and worked on the amazing New York City water system, which is an engineering marvel. I moved to North Carolina in 1990 with a firm that was opening here as I wanted a change in my life, and it’s been home since. I have had an opportunity to work on some very impactful and interesting projects over the many years. I love solving problems, it’s what engineers do!
WHY DID YOU CHOOSE MCGILL?
After many years of working for international consulting firms, I wanted to get back to a more local focus. McGill’s culture attracted me. As I see it, our culture prioritizes clients, communities, and people.
WHAT IS THE MOST REWARDING PART ABOUT WORKING WITH MUNICIPALITIES?
By and large, we live in or near the communities that we work for. The ability to see the tangible positive impact our work has on where we live is very gratifying. We are doing things that will leave a better world for our children and grandchildren.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE HERE AT MCGILL?
The people who work here and the clients we work for. We are a likeable bunch!
WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLANGING ASPECT OF YOUR ROLE AT MCGILL?
I would say the most challenging aspect of my role is navigating an ever-changing business environment and making sure that we set ourselves up for sustained success while staying true to our values.
WHAT DO YOU WANT OUR CLIENTS TO KNOW?
I want our clients to know that when they invest their trust in us, they will get the very best from us. Always.
