McGill Associates Assists with Medical Facility Improvements in Haywood, Mitchell Counties

Access to quality medical care in the Mitchell County and Haywood County areas of Western North Carolina just got easier, thanks to two new Mission facilities.

Mitchell County

The new Mauzy-Phillips Center, in Spruce Pine, is a 30,000-square-foot medical office building located on the campus of Blue Ridge Regional Hospital. The facility provides space for primary care, orthopedics, general surgery, wound care, laboratory and X-ray services, an in-house pharmacy, endoscopy suites, and a Mission WorkWell office that provides occupational health services.

McGill Associates provided conceptual layouts that required coordination with the owner, architect, developer, and all design disciplines. Of particular importance to the project was accessibility, traffic patterns, stormwater management, and grading of the site. The design effort entailed addressing erosion control, water and sewer utilities, and pedestrian access.

The efficient design of the building provides for better communication between departments and allows the facility to house eight physicians simultaneously. Physicians can rent space in the facility, and staff and equipment are provided by the hospital. The proximity of the Mauzy-Phillips Center to the hospital allows physicians to easily monitor patients staying in the hospital.

Haywood County

Patients in Haywood County can find a new 30,000-square-foot medical office building on Hospital Drive, near the Haywood Regional Medical Center in Clyde. The facility houses primary and specialty care physicians and expanded lab and imaging services, wound care, and rotating specialists, including orthopedics.

One of the challenges of this project was to design a building that could be expanded in the future. McGill Associates worked closely with the design-build team – consisting of the owner, developer, architect, construction management team and regulatory agencies – from the early concepts through construction drawings and inspections. The design efforts included erosion control, storm detention, access and parking layouts, water, sewer, inspections, coordination with other engineering disciplines, and intensive preplanning for additional expansion.
