Solid Waste
McGill implements conventional and innovative solid waste solutions that meet the needs of communities and enhance the quality of life; this is achieved by protecting the critical ground, surface water resources, and air quality in our solid waste planning and designs. Our solid waste team has extensive experience providing conventional solid waste management consulting services, including master planning, material recovery facilities design, municipal solid waste landfills, construction and demolition landfills, transfer station, and resource recovery planning. We are leaders in applying innovative civil designs and new technologies to better manage solid waste and its by-products and can provide new revenue sources to owners of closed and operating landfills through the reduction of greenhouse gases.
Planning & Studies
McGill provides expert master planning and site suitability studies, and creates solid waste disposal alternatives. Our services range from waste collection system and capital improvements planning, financial assessments, and pro forma development, to tailored disposal and recycling scenarios. McGill engineers maximize the use of available land and materials, while minimizing impact on the environment. We also conduct demonstration-of-need studies, refuse route planning, traffic impact assessments, soil borrow material studies, and public feedback analyses. Our staff provides recycling program evaluation and planning, and operations efficiency analysis to determine the most cost-effective recycling options. Lastly, we provide safety and security planning to ensure reliable disposition of the wastes.
Design, Permitting, & Compliance
Our engineers have been helping clients maintain regulatory compliance with solid waste regulations for over 35 years. On each project, we apply our experience in facility construction quality assurance (CQA), landfill construction monitoring, and laboratory materials testing. Our specially trained professionals conduct the requisite CQA monitoring, prepare the appropriate documentation, and enforce strict quality control; this also includes helping our clients meet regulatory requirements to assess corrective measure and corrective action plans, as needed. Our engineers have participated in the development of new solid waste regulations, guidance documents, and best management practices for solid waste.
Alternative Solid Waste Initiatives & Innovation
For over 20 years, our team has been at the forefront of developing new, science-based sustainable methods for waste management; many of these methods and technologies are now being integrated into current solid waste management practices and regulations. Led by a multi-disciplinary team with backgrounds in civil and wastewater engineering, landfill design, climate change, biochemistry, and hydrogeology, McGill is one of the few firms with a unique understanding of the physical and biochemical processes occurring inside landfills. We apply this expertise to designing systems and approaches that lower costs, improve environmental protection, and provide new revenues to owners of both closed and operating landfills – all while maximizing resources and operational efficiency and maintaining regulatory compliance.
