Engineers Week 2023 Interview: AJ Summers, Engineering Technician
This week at McGill we celebrate Engineers Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the future of engineering. The week was created by the National Society for Professional Engineers (NSPE) an organization that is dedicated to “Creating a world where the public can be confident that engineering decisions affecting their lives are made by qualified and ethically accountable professionals.” The theme this year for Engineers Week is Creating the Future. With this theme in mind, we interviewed six of our employees who are newer to the field of engineering and are paving the way in the engineering field each day. Read our interviews each day to find out what excites them about their current work and the future.
Engineers Week 2023: Today, meet AJ Summers, Engineering Technician in our Asheville office
Why did you pursue the engineering field?
I have always had a passion for the well-being of others and in my eyes, engineers create a world that has functionality and purpose; therefore, making life easier and more comfortable for everyone.
What excites you about problem solving?
Problem solving to me is more of a thrill then it is a task. There is something about being presented with a problem that makes me feel like I have a purpose in this world, bringing solutions to others.
What are your hopes for the future of engineering? How do you plan to be a part of that / contribute to that?
My hopes are to become a professional engineer (studying for my FE now) and become even more active in the engineering community.
Is there a project you’ve recently worked on that you are proud of?
The Alleghany County building project has just begun construction and seeing that has me excited. That was the first project that I was turned loose on and it helped me understand a lot of the things that are required for a project to meet completion and start construction — giving me a whole new understanding of what I can do as a civil engineer.
Is there something new in the field that you’d like to share or that excites you?
I learn new things about the field every day, so everything excites me. There is never a dull moment in civil engineering.
